My maternal grandfather, Jacob Joseph Shapiro (1896-1977), was a young doughboy from Pittsburgh who went to France to fight in the Great War.
He arrived, he told us, on 11 November 1918 —Armistice Day.
Today, on Veteran’s Day, I thank him and all of America’s soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines for their great service and sacrifice.

That was one of the best games this whole season. Probably the best.
What an impressive bunch of young men, living out an incredible dream —and all for the benefit of the Texas Longhorns.
Go, Rutgers!!!

Yikes! Looks like the Republicans might lose the Senate, too.
Looks like Allen’s going to need to find and throw out some crooked votes in the Democratic precincts if he wants to keep his job.

Bob Menendez wins in New Jersey, but the guy is dirty. He’ll be a great punching bag for people wanting to talk a lot about corruption in the Democratic Party of that state.

It’s only a small percentage of the precincts reporting, but damn! Chris Bell, Democratic nominee for the Governorship of Texas, is only seven points behind the incumbent Rick Perry?! Wow. I am surprised.

This is Ramsey Clark in the court today where Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death for his crimes against humanity.
The Kurdish judge in charge of the trial kicked his ass out of the court for making a mockery of the proceedings. Told him in English to get out.
Do you know who this man is, though?
Clark was the Attorney General of the United States under Democratic President Lyndon Johnson. And now he spends his life defending any mass murderer or dictator anywhere so long as that mass murderer or dictator shares his hatred of the United States. Clark is an embarrassment on a par with other Democrats like Jimmy Carter and John Kerry.
But that’s what the Democratic Party stands for on the international scene: self-loathing and second-guessing. Unfortunately, this party is on the verge of regaining power in the Congress.
I hope the spectacle of that triumph will serve to more fully expose them as the suspect sort they are.

Saddam Hussein has been sentenced to death by hanging for his crimes against humanity.
The United States and our friends are the reason why this moment is possible.
Will this event even matter to the American People when they wake up today? I think it is a deeply significant moment in the history of the Muslim Middle East, but it could have been more. If this Administration and the Big Media machine that has dogged it so constantly had done more —in their own spheres— to make this trial and judgement relevant to this country, it might have made this war a better cause in the minds of the American People. But Big Media has sabotaged that effort. And the Bush Administration, in its contemptible and inexplicable silences, has allowed that to happen.
I don’t say that the press answers to this government. I only mean that Bush has failed to engage the public through the press and through the bully pulpit.
Anyway, hang the brutes. If Saddam wants the dignity of a firing squad, deny him that. Hang the bastard instead. Hang him in the middle of Baghdad on a giant scaffolding. Televise it. Let these savages flip their lids over it and get it all out of their systems.
Somebody needs to walk away from this war a winner. I say it should be us. I say it should be a pacified Iraq.
